What does a culumus cloud look like?
Flat bottom, puffy, white
100
What is precipitation? What are some types of precipitation?
Precipitation is any form of water that falls from the sky. Some are hail, freezing rain, rain, snow, ice.
100
What is an air mass, and air pressure?
An air masses are large bodies of air that has the same temperature and pressure. Air pressure is the amount of weight above Earth’s surface. Air pressure can be either High or Low.
100
Explain how a thermometer helps determine the weather?
It measures how hot or cold it is outside.
100
Define weather.
The state of the air and atmosphere at a particular time and place (like wind speed, air pressure, temperature, etc)
200
What is a cirrus cloud made of? What does it look like?
It is made up of ice crystals. Wispy, white, high in the atmosphere.
200
What are the definitions for rain, snow and sleet?
Rain is liquid water falling toward the ground. Snow is Sleet is
200
Describe a cold front, and the type of weather it brings.
A cold front is when rapidly moving cold air mass collides with a warm air mass. This causes rapid changes in the weather, thunderstorms, high winds, etc.
200
What does an anemometer do?
It measures wind speed.
200
Define climate.
Climate is the pattern weather conditions for a particular place.
300
Describe stratus clouds, and the special weather they bring.
Stratus clouds are low level clouds that cover the sky like a blanket. When they come down from the atmosphere they make fog.
300
Explain how the water cycle causes clouds to form.
Water vapor is released into the atmosphere through evaporation or transipration. Once it goes higher up into the atmosphere it condenses back into a water droplet around a dust particle to make a cloud.
300
What is a warm front, and what type of weather does it bring?
When a slow moving warm air mass collides with a cold air mass. It causes rain or fog that can last for several days.
300
Explain what a barometer measures, and what information you would gain from the barometer.
A barometer measures the air pressure. By knowing the air pressure a person can determine it if will be clear, cloudy, stormy, or precipitating outside.
300
How is wind caused?
The circluation of air changing from high pressure to low pressure. (High pressure being warm air, low pressure being cold air)
400
What causes precipitation.
When a cloud gets too many water droplets, the water droplets get too heavy to be held by the cloud, so they fall to the ground.
400
What is transpiration?
Evaporation that comes off of plants and animals. Is apart of the water cycle.
400
What is a stationary front? What type of weather does it cause?
A Stationary front is when a cold air mass and a warm air mass collide but niether is strong enough to push the other one away. Causes rain, snow, clouds, or fog over an area for several days.
400
What is a hygrometer?
It measures the humdity in the air.
400
Describe the type of weather we should expect with a high pressure system.
High pressure, heavy air, results in usually dryer weather and cooler temperatures. Can also cause blue skies (no clouds), fair nice weather.
500
How are clouds formed?
Evaporation causes water vapor to rise, the water vapor cools turning into water droplets. Those water droplets form around dust particles in the air and condense to make a cloud.
500
Explain the water cycle using the words evaporation, condenstation, precipitation, run-off, and accumulation.
Water evaporates to make water vapor, which goes up into the atmosphere where is cools and forms water droplets. The water droplets condense around a dust partcle to create a cloud. When the clouds get to heavy the clouds release precipitaion. Precipitation run off the ground into a stream where is accumulates.
500
What is occluded front? What type of weather does it cause?
This is when a warm air mass is caught in between two cold air masses. The warm air mass is then pushed upward. This causes the weather to be cloudy, rainy or snowy.
500
Describe how you could look at a map and determine the weather. (talking about fronts, temperature, clouds, etc)
A weather map can show you if there is a front (warm, cold, stationary, or occluded) heading your way, it can also tell you about the air pressure in your area, the temperature and any type of precipitation that may fall in your area.
500
Describe the type of weather a low pressure system will bring.
Low pressure usually means wet weather and warmer temperatures. Also causes clouds.
