Writing that appeals to the senses: sight, sound, touch, feeling, taste

When you compare something to something else using the words "like" or "as"
Simile
When you compare something to something else but NOT using the words "like" or "as"
metaphor
The sky was as blue as the ocean and the clouds sailed across it like white boats.
imagery
A reference to a myth, an important event, another literary work, a famous person, or place of historical importance.
allusion
An idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal definition
connotation
A hint to a reader, which may or may not be obvious during a first reading, about the general direction of the plot
