These are the living things in an ecosystem.
What are biotic factors?
A large geographical area that has similar climate and ecosystems.
What are biomes?
A lynx' large paws (to not sink in the snow) and lions circling their prey, are both examples.
What are adaptations?
This is how plants make their own energy (one word).
What is photosynthesis?
What types of living organisms might we find at the BOTTOM of an energy pyramid?
What are plants and other primary producers?
These are non-living parts of an ecosystem.
What are abiotic factors?
This biome gets very little precipitation, high temperatures during the day, but can have very low temperatures at night.
What are deserts?
You are watching a nature show and see a giraffe eating leaves from a tree. What adaptation allows them to do this AND is it a behavioral or physical adaptation?
What is their long neck that allows them to reach high branches. This is a physical adaptation because it is a part of their body.
Name one of the three things plants NEED in order to do photosynthesis.
What is water, sunlight, or carbon dioxide?
What type of living organisms might be found on the second level of an energy pyramid?
What are insects, rabbits, and other herbivores.
The survival of organisms in an ecosystem is affected by
a. biotic factors
b. abiotic factors
c. BOTH biotic AND abiotic factors
d. NEITHER biotic OR abiotic factors
What is c. Both biotic AND abiotic factors?
This is the largest biome in the world
a. tundra
b. taiga
c. tropical rainforest
What is b. taiga?
Why do plants/animals form different adaptations around the world?
To survive in their ecosystem/biome?
Which of the following is NOT produced by photosynthesis?
a. carbon dioxide
b. oxygen
c. sugar (glucose)
What is a. carbon dioxide (which is released during cellular respiration)?
What type of living thing might we find at the very top of an energy pyramid?
What is an apex predator that does not have any, or very few, predators itself (such as a lion or eagle).
Which of the following is a biotic factor in a stream ecosystem?
a. sunlight
b. water grasses
c. water
d. rock
What is b. water grasses?
This biome has the most colorful and diverse animals and plants.
a. savannah
b. deciduous forest
c. tropical rainforest
What is c. tropical rainforest?
As a result of climate change, the event shown in the picture below has become more common in western forests in recent years.

If these events continue, which of the following abilities would an insect population that becomes more abundant in the forest most likely have?
a. The ability to fly short distances
b. The ability to burrow into the soil
c. The ability to develop in water
d. The ability to stick to tree branches
What is b. The ability to burrow into the soil?
These are the two things photosynthesis PRODUCES.
What are glucose (sugar) and oxygen?
Look at the energy pyramid below. What would we expect to see happen to the biotic factors in the ecosystem if many of the trees in the area are cut down?

We would expect to see less deer and squirrels since deer eat small trees and squirrels live in trees. Then, we would expect to see less foxes because foxes eat squirrels. Finally, we would expect to see less owls and big cats because owls need trees for their habitat and big cats eat foxes. Overall, the ecosystem would become less healthy and less stable.
Name 3 biotic and 3 abiotic factors that could be in an ecosystem.
Any 5 biotic (must be living) and any 5 abiotic factors (nonliving/ part of ecosystem)?
A new animal is discovered that makes its home in trees, but its habit was destroyed and it needs to be relocated. Out of the three following biomes, where would it make most sense to relocate this animal?
a. desert
b. savannah
c. tundra
What is b. savannah?
Name 2 specific adaptations a plant or animal has and how they each help the plant and/or animal survive.
Any two examples that are real and make sense.
Good example: Lynx has large paws that act as snow shoes so they don't sink into the snow
Bad example: There is oxygen so we can breathe.
Explain photosynthesis (what is needed and what is produced).
During photosynthesis, a plant takes water, carbon dioxide, and energy from sunlight in order to make glucose (sugar) and releases oxygen as a waste product.
The graph below shows the elk population in Yellowstone from 1923-2015. What changes to the ecosystem (plants, animals, river, etc) would we expect to see between 1975 and 1991?

Claim: We would expect to see less beavers and a wider river form.
Evidence:
- elk pop. in 1971 = about 5,000
- elk pop. in 1995 = about 16,000
- elk pop. increased by 11,000 between 1971 and 1995.
Reasoning: One of the foods that elk eat are small trees. With a higher elk population, that would lead to more small trees being eaten, which would results in less trees growing. Since beavers also eat and use trees, this would lead to less beavers. Since trees also help stop erosion, less trees would mean the river could erode easier and become wider.
