What is dialogue in the writing process?

What your characters speak, say, or do out loud.

What are the eight parts of speech? After naming, identify each one and what they do.

1. Noun: A person, place, or thing

2. Pronoun: Modifies a noun (he, she, it, they,etc)

3. Verb: Action verbs/ state of being

4. Adverb: Often ends in "ly" 99% of the time.  Describes other adverbs, verbs, prepositions, and adjectives

5. Adjective: Describes nouns

6. Preposition: Relates a noun or pronoun to some other part of sentence

7. Conjunction: FANBOYS! They join independent clauses together in a sentence

8. Interjection: A word or cry expressing sudden or strong feelings and usually lacking grammatical corrections.

What is alliteration, allusion, foreshadowing, and symbolism?

Alliteration: When words that start with the same SOUND (not only letter) is used repeatedly in a phrase and or sentence

Allusion: An indirect reference to a piece of literary, art, etc that that the writer hopes the reader will understand

Foreshadowing: Hinting at future events (Can be indirect or direct)

Symbolism: The concept of things representing other things

Metaphor: A comparison between two unlike things without using like or as

Simile: The comparison between two similar things using like and or as

Allegory: A story inside of a story

What is diction? What is the dynamic vs. static characters?

Diction: A writer's/speakers vocab choices and expression in a piece of writing like a story and or poem

Dynamic vs static characters: A static character goes through little to no change at all. Dynamic characters goes through significant change throughout the story.

What is a comma splice, run-on sentence, sentence frag, and the "I know that..." test?

Comma splice: When a comma is used to link two independent clauses together

Run on: When more than one independent clause is jammed together next to another independent clause with no proper punctuation

Sentence Fragment: When an incomplete sentence is punctuated as if it was a complete sentence

"I know that..." test: When "I know that..." is placed in front of a phrase, clause, or unknown chunk of words to determine if it makes sense and is a complete thought.

Mood: What the readers feels as they read

Onomatopoeia: A word that imitates the natural sounds of a thing

Personification: When an animal/object is given qualities and or traits that only a human can have

Poetry: A way for writers to create a link/comparison  between objects and ideas by using words/phrases in a non-literal way to draw on emotions of the reader

Literary analysis: Considers the aspects of a novel, book, story, play

Narrative: A spoken or written account of connected events

Non-Fiction: REAL writing (based on facts, real events, real people, etc)

What are clauses? What is an independent/main, dependent/subordinate clause? What are the four types of sentences and what are the "to be" verbs?

Clauses: A chunk of words that includes a subject (noun, pronoun, implied you) and a predicate (verb) that can stand alone as part of a sentence or as a sentence itself

Independent/main clause: A clause that includes a subject and predicate that CAN stand alone as a sentence

Dependent/subordinate clause: A clause that includes a subject and predicate that CANNOT stand alone as a sentence

Simple: Includes an independent clause

Compound: Includes two independent clauses

Complex: Includes 1 independent clause, 1 dependent clause, 1 independent clause, subordinating conjunction, dependent clause

Complex-Compound: Independent clause, Independent clause, dependent clause (ORDER CAN VARY!!!!)

"To be" verbs: Am, Is, Are, Was, Were

What is anthromorphism, hyperbole, imagery, and motif?

Anthromorphism: Something nonhuman behaves as human

Hyperbole: An exaggeration that is obvious, extreme, and intentional

Imagery: When a writer uses very descriptive language to appeal to all of your senses

Motif: A distinctive repeating feature and or idea.

What is a persona? What is repetition? 

Persona: The aspect of someone's character that is presented to or perceived by others.

Repetition: A word and or phrase used multiple times in a text, for the purpose of emphasizing an emotion and or idea.
