Erosion and Deposition
100
A type of stream that slows as it reaches gentler slopes
What is a mature stream?
100
Windblown deposit of silt and clay
What is loess?
100
Sharp ridge of rock formed between two glaciers
What is an arete?
100
The main force that causes mass wasting
What is gravity?
100

The removal of weathered material from one location to another

Erosion

200
Water dissolves and washes away the limestone underground.
What is a cave?
200
Grinding away of rock or other surfaces as particles carried by wind, water, or ice scrape against them.
What is abrasion?
200

Various sizes of unsorted sediment deposited by a glacier

Till or a Moraine

200
Pile of angular rocks and sediment at the base of a rockfall
What is talus?
200

The layering down or settling of eroded material

Deposition

300
A large deposit of sediment that forms where a stream enters a large body of water.
What is a delta?
300
Planting trees and other vegetation, not allowing animals to overgraze, not plowing fields
What are ways to slow wind erosion?
300

Layered sediment deposited by streams of water that flow from a melting glacier

Outwash

300
Type of mass wasting that moves so slowly it is not noticeable
What is creep?
300

Processes that build up features on Earth's surface

Processes that tear down features on Earth's surface

Constructive and Deconstructive Processes

400

A current that flows parallel to the shoreline

Longshore Current

400

What is an example of a land feature created that is formed from a constructive force?

Volcanic eruption making new land from lava flows.   Plate tectonic pushing together to form mountains.

400

A sharp peak formed when several glaciers descend from the top of the same mountain

Horn

400

The rapid downhill movement of soil, loose rocks, and boulders

landslide

400

An apron of sediment that forms where a stream flows from a steep, narrow canyon onto a flat plain at the foot of a mountain

Alluvial Fan

500

A broad, C-shaped curve in a stream

Meander

500

What is a destructive force that destroys land features?

Hurricanes provide strong winds that can blow away sediments or wash away beaches.

Volcanoes can blow a volcanic mountain apart.

500

Describe the 3 stages of stream development AND the features found in each stage.

Young: Water falls, steep slopes, rapids, water erodes the bottom of the stream or river.  V-shaped valleys.

Mature: Gentler slopes, wider channels, water erodes the sides more than the bottom, U-shaped valleys, meanders start to form.

Old: Slower water, wider channel, meanders, empties into a larger body of water and may have deltas at the end of the old stream. Flat area.

500

When there are steep slopes, little vegetation, and rock is weak and crumbly.

More erosion occurs by mass wasting
