The nullification crisis was a dispute over tariffs. The North supported high tariffs to subsidize their fledgling manufacturing industry against the cheaper products that could be sent to the United states by Great Britain. While, the South was opposed to this tariff because it took away profits from cotton farmers based on Great Britain's retaliatory tariff on cotton, so South Carolina threatened to nullify the tariff and secede.

Dred Scott was a slave who was taken by his master to the free states of Illinois and Wisconsin. Scott sued the state but his case was rejected because the Court declared that slaves and freed blacks should not have the right to sue anyone and were not citizens of the U.S.
