Why don't contour lines on a topographic map intersect or cross over each other?
A contour line represents a single elevation for that particular part of the earth's surface, there cannot be two different elevations for a single point on the surface.

The sun's energy hits the planet in straight lines. The earth being a sphere creates curved edges on which the energy is absorbed. The equator is direct and consistent energy absorption, however the higher latitudes - polar regions are curved and spreads the energy out. Thus, equator and tropics are hot, polar regions are colder.
The international date line separates days, 24 hour difference. In hawaii its 4am Thursday, what DAY is it in New Zealand on the other side of the date line?
