What is Medicare
What is a long and healthy life?
One of the three dimensions measured by the Human Development Index that is represented by life expectancy.
What does the acroynym PBS represent?
Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme
What is safe water?
Water free from disease-causing pathogens and harmful chemicals.
What is climate change?
This global trend involves long-term changes in temperature, rainfall and weather patterns.
What are two things that are not covered by medicare?
Glasses, ambulance services, cosmetic surgery, dental examinations
What is access to knowledge?
The Human Development Index dimension measured by years of schooling.
Name the support that ensures those who spend a large amount of money on the PBS receive additional financial support
PBS Safety Net
What is absolute poverty?
The type of poverty experienced by people living on less than approximately US$3 per day.
What is conflict?
This global trend can directly cause injury and death and indirectly damage hospitals, water systems and schools.
How is Medicare funded?
(State all 3!)
General taxation
Medicare levy
Medicare levy surcharge
The Human Development Index dimension measured by GNI per capita.
What is a decent standard of living?

Increased financial burden
Potential for reduced life expectancy
Higher YLD
What is sanitation?
The safe disposal of human urine and faeces.
What is increased world trade?
This global trend can create employment and increase access to goods, but its benefits may be uneven and workers may experience unsafe conditions.
State one advantage and one disadvantage of Medicare
Available to all Australian citizens
No choice of doctor for in-hospital treatments

Calculate the out-of-pocket expenses required.
Explain how having private health insurance could promote the physical health and wellbeing of an individual requiring a hip replacement.

Identify how listing a drug that assists with cardiac (heart) conditions on the PBS would improve Australia's health status.
It would help Australian's be able to afford the medication. Increased access means a prevention against heart attacks, as a result fewer people die prematurely, which lowers Australia's mortality (death) rates and increases overall life expectancy.
What is discrimination?
Members of a minority group experience unfair treatment when applying for jobs and accessing health services. Explain how this factor could affect both health and human development.
What is mass migration?
This involves large numbers of people relocating within or between countries, sometimes because of conflict, poverty or environmental change.
