The lifeguard who is the first person to come upon an emergency (active drowning victim, person unconscious in the locker room etc.)

What is SAMPLE
A mnemonic device you should use when getting information from someone in an emergency:
S-signs and symptoms
A-Allergies (medications, food, bees, latex)
M- medications they are taking
P- pertinent past medical history (do they have epilepsy or diabetes etc.)
L- last oral intake (when was the last time they had anything to eat or drink)
E- Events leading up the incident ( ex. they were swimming in deep end and noticed their chest hurt )
What is at least 2 inches?
The correct depth to compress an adults chest during compressions.
BONUS: Child: about 2 inches
Infant: about 1.5 inches
5 key principles of HIGH-QUALITY CPR
1. Makes sure person is on firm flat surface
2. Provide compressions at the correct rate and proper depth
3. Allow the chest to return to its normal position after each compression (recoil)
4. Minimize interruptions to chest compressions
5. Avoid excessive ventilations.

What is purpose of PPE?
To protect yourself from people's bodily fluids- these could contain pathogens.
The primary reason for cardiac arrest in children?
What is respiratory issues (asthma/anaphylaxis, obstructed airway, drowning or an injury.
Ventilations and appropriate oxygenation are importation for a successful resuscitation.
When should you use in-line stabilization techniques?
To rescue and remove a person from the water when you suspect a head, neck or spinal injury, BUT the person appears to be breathing.
If person is passive (not breathing no pulse) THAT takes priority over stabilizing head, neck and spine.
Where lifejackets should NOT be
In the deep end of the pool. Must have adult with them in the water if wearing a lifejacket.
ALSO: the spa obviously, diving board and rock wall.

What is the recovery position?
A position you can place person who is responsive and breathing normally but not fully awake. This minimizes risk for choking and aspiration. Roll person on their side towards you, so that you can continue to monitor their breathing and responsiveness with minimal interruptions.
What is the only time the number of compressions to breaths changes in CPR?
Multiple person CPR with children and infants
15 compressions to 2 breaths
How quickly can cardiac arrest as a result of drowning?
As little as 3 minutes- brain damage and death can occur in as little as 4-6 minutes. The sooner the drowning process is stopped ( by getting airway out of water) the better the chances for survival.
Where can kids play
"playing" is allowed in the 4ft open area and the beach area. Lanes are for lap swimming/exercise only. Do not let people swim under lane lines and move from lane to lane.

How would you care for someone with a nosebleed?
1. Put on gloves
2. Get a trash can/ or trash bag- place near person.
3. Have them sit down- instruct them to lean forward( this will prevent blood from running into their throat)
4. Give them paper towels, gauze, a tampon to absorb blood.
5. Fill out an incident report. Give them ice if needed. Pinch nose high on bridge. Make sure area is clean!! clean up blood on flood or chair as needed.
6. Monitor them for any additional issues ( dizzy from blood loss, dehydration, fainting from blood loss)

Failing to recognize and prevent an aquatic emergency?
Negligence- meaning a lifeguard failed to follow the standard of care or failed to act at all.
What is the Aux pool intended to be?
A quiet environment for people to exercise, water walk, stretch, do physical therapy type activities.
It is NOT a play pool for little kids and families. No jumping/splashing is allowed. PLEASE ENFORCE THESE RULES!!
