The difference between speed and velocity is....
Velocity is a vector- requires a direction!
Distance is on the y-axis.
Time is on the x-axis.
A horizontal (flat) line on a Speed v Time graph indicates that....
the object is moving with a constant speed.
On your whiteboard...
Distance v Time graph- an object at rest.
Teacher's Choice.
The motion of an object is described as 240 mph to the northeast. What form of motion is being described?
Velocity
A horizontal (flat) line on a Distance v Time Graphs indicates that the object is...
Not Moving. At rest!
A upward (from left to right), straight, diagonal line means....
The object is accelerating!
On your whiteboard...
Distance v Time graph- an object moving at constant speed.
Ms. P's choice.
What two factor do you need to calculate speed?
Distance and Time.
A straight, diagonal line, moving upward from left to right, on a Distance v Time graph indicates that an object is moving with/at....
a constant speed
A downward (from left to right), straight, diagonal line means...
The object is decelerating.
On your whiteboard...
Speed v Time graph- an object decelerating.
Ms. P's choice.
An avalanche increasing speed down the side of a mountain is an example of...
acceleration!
If two objects are graphed on a Distance v Time graph, the object with the ________ line is moving faster.
The steeper the graph, the greater the _______.
Not faster, not speed.
acceleration.
On your whiteboard...
Distance v Time graph- two racing cars driving at the exact same speed, but they started at different places (distances).
Ms. P's choice.
The equation for acceleration is...
a= (vf-vi)/(tf-ti)
A line that curves upward on a Distance v Time graph is increasing in _______.
The object is ______________.
Speed!
Accelerating!
On a Speed v Time graph, on which s-value (speed value) would you plot your horizontal line for a car "at rest?"
s=0.
The line would run along the x-axis.
On your whiteboard...
Velocity v Time graph-
You set out driving to the store. You drive with a constant acceleration, then settle into a constant speed until you pull into the parking lot. You decelerate and park. While shopping, you run out of money. You don't want to go home and then come back, so instead decide to shove a few necessary items into your bag and hope no one notices. Unfortunately, the cart-guy notices and begins to approach you as you're packing your things into your trunk. You jump in your car. You accelerate way faster than you did on your initial trip to the store and book it out of there. In fact, you accelerate all the way to your house where you slam on the brakes and come to a screeching halt in your driveway.
Ms. P's choice.
