If I have a problem with someone or hear something that I don't like, what do I do?
With a strong culture of feedback, “difficult conversations” are few and far between. However, our work is emotional (and we are not perfect), and there will invariably be times that necessitate such conversations. In these instances, it is essential that we take our thoughts straight to the source, rather than engaging in gossip. Here are two best practices for how we engage in such situations at KBP:
Don’t let things sit. If you wait for more than 24 hours, you are going to stress yourself out more and waste time and energy.
Seek to understand. Lead with questions before stating your claim, evidence, and impact.
No Drama
Our staff will have fun. But we will never, ever engage in gossip. It is contrary to who we are as a team and the habits we are asking our students to develop. When somebody shares information about themselves, get in the habit of simply asking: is this okay to talk to others about? If you see somebody engaging in gossip, politely remove yourself from the conversation, or give the person feedback about it.
You’ll probably be on board with most things at our school but the fact is – everybody won’t always be. There are times during the year when we’ll be overtired, a little bit sick, stressed, or disagree with a decision. We all still need to be professionals and bring our best selves for students, so we must keep in mind our tone, facial expressions, and body language.
