Salient details - the details that are crucial to understanding the author's purpose and main idea

200

How can repetition help with your memory?

When you are studying for a test or learning new material, practicing that topic many times can help engrain it in your long term memory

200

When would you use chunking?

When you have to read a longer or more difficult passage and you are having a harder time understanding it

200

How can visualizing help you with comprehension?

Making a mental image of a topic will create a stronger memory of that topic and when you think about the topic, you will automatically picture it which helps understand it!

How would you chunk this paragraph into two different parts?

"The water cycle describes how water moves around Earth. First, water evaporates from oceans, lakes, and rivers into the air. Then it cools and forms clouds through condensation. Eventually, the water falls back to Earth as precipitation such as rain or snow.

The cycle is important because it provides fresh water for plants, animals, and people. Temperature and weather conditions can affect how quickly evaporation happens. Sunny and 70 degree weather is the best."

1st chunk: The water cycle definition

2nd chunk: The importance of the water cycle

300

What do you picture in this story?

"Bees help plants grow by carrying pollen from one flower to another. This process is called pollination. Bees are yellow and black. Many fruits and vegetables, including apples, strawberries, and cucumbers, depend on bees to grow. Without bees, farmers would have a harder time producing food."

I see yellow and black bees flying around a field of flowers. Some bees are sitting on top of the pollen and other bees are flying between the flowers

400

What is the main idea and 1 salient and 1 non-salient detail of this passage?

"Bees help plants grow by carrying pollen from one flower to another. This process is called pollination. Bees are yellow and black. Many fruits and vegetables, including apples, strawberries, and cucumbers, depend on bees to grow. Without bees, farmers would have a harder time producing food."

Main idea: Pollination is a process where bees carry pollen from one flower to another and this helps plants grow.

Salient detail - Farmers would have a harder time producing food.

Non-salient detail - Bees are yellow and black

I see an ocean where little water particles are floating up into the sky and forming really big and fluffy clouds and then a huge rainstorm starts with thunder and lightening. Once the rainstorm is over, I see a rainbow starting to develop in the sky

WRAP strategies can help with your memory and strengthen your understanding of topics. We talked about each part of W.R.A.P, do you remember what each letter stands for?

How could you chunk this passage into two parts?

"Volcanoes form when melted rock called magma rises from deep inside the Earth. When pressure builds up, the volcano can erupt and release lava, ash, and gases. Some eruptions happen slowly, while others are explosive and dangerous.

Scientists monitor volcanoes by measuring earthquakes, gas levels, and changes in the shape of the ground nearby. These warning signs can help communities prepare for possible eruptions."

Chunk 1: What volcanoes are

Chunk 2: How scientists monitor volcanoes and the importance

I see a big volcano with lava coming out of it. Thankfully, the volcano is far away from any communities and I see people watching the news report of scientists describing the changes of the ground shape nearby.
