The Manatee Center opened in 1996 to help educate the public about all of the manatees that frequented Moore's Creek for the warm water outflow from the old power plant.

Food and water from a hose. These things disrupt manatee natural instincts as well as accustom them to associating with humans. Not all humans are manatee advocates like us!

The volunteer handbook has a lot of information on manatees. There are quick facts about manatees on our events calendars. The books in the bookcase next to the greeter desk are a good resource as well. The touch tank information is behind the computer exhibit next to the touch tank.

Someone comes in asking about volunteering. What do you do?
Tell them how great it is! Have them fill out the proper volunteer application. Notify Jackie so she can discuss volunteer opportunities with them.

Manatees' lungs are essential to helping them float in the water. Why are manatee lungs so vunerable to boat strikes?
Their lungs run along their backs, where most boat strikes happen. If a lung gets punctured, it is very hard for a manatee to stay afloat.

Summer Camp season is starting! What is the Gift Shop procedure to ring up a summer camp?
Make sure parent has filled out registration form and has applied all discounts. Use camp code 15 and enter amount of payment. At time of transaction, fill out half sheet of paper on clipboard with date, parent's name, child's name, transaction number and amount paid that day.

There are three different volunteer shifts during the week. What are they and how long should volunteers stay during their shift?
Tuesday-Saturday shifts are 10:30-1:30 and 1:30-5:00 Sunday shift is 12:00-4:00 Volunteers should come 10 minutes early for each shift to help with opening procedures or to relieve previous volunteers. All volunteers should stay for the entire shift.
