Parts of Speech
This part of speech describes a noun. Two examples are in the following sentence: It was a BRIGHT, SUNNY day.
What is an adjective?
"Sharp as a tack" is an example of this style of figurative language.
What is a simile?
A pair of round brackets ( ) used to mark off a parenthetical word or phrase.
What are parentheses?
"Jeffrey got attacked by a grizzly bear." The word "attacked" is used as what part of speech?
What is a verb?
This punctuation mark is used to combine two short, closely related independent clauses; Use it sparingly instead of a period.
What is a semicolon?
This part of speech takes the place of a noun, is more specific, and always starts with a capital letter. An example is Trevor Noah.
What is a proper noun?
Prose writing that is based on facts, real events, and real people, such as biography or news articles.
What is nonfiction?
This is the general feeling expressed by a story.
What is the mood?
This punctuation mark is used to indicate a specific example of something that came before. It can be used to introduce a list or even a quote: "Ms. O'Brien loves analyzing punctuation!"
What is a colon?
You use this part of speech to replace a noun. It refers to a noun that has already been mentioned. Examples are capitalized in the following quote: “HE almost thought HE heard the motion of HER hands as SHE walked” (Bradbury 5).
What is a pronoun?
Literature in the form of prose that describes imaginary events and people.
What is fiction?
This is the main idea or message of a work of literature. It with a topic (for example, love), but it is not a single word. Instead, it is expressed as a statement that reveals the author or director’s ideas on that topic.
What is the theme?
This punctuation mark is used before a coordinating conjunction in a compound sentence. It is also used after a signal phrase. Example: Trevor writes, "quote." or "I love chips, but I love chocolate more."
What is a comma?
This is part of speech that connects words, phrases, or clauses. Examples are capitalized in this quote: “Above all, their laughter was relaxed AND hearty AND not forced in any way” (Bradbury 17).
What is a conjunction?
In a piece of argumentative writing, this is the term used to describe the opposing argument.
What is a counterargument?
The attitude of the writer toward a subject that is expressed in their writing.
What is tone?
This punctuation mark can be used to modify a part of the sentence. For example, I might say, "Ms. O'Brien -- an exceptionally kind teacher -- deserves to have a day off for the holiday."
