CN  palsies occur in 5-10% of adults with bacterial meningitis. 


Mostly due to compression caused by brain swelling or of perineuritis caused by meningeal inflammation. 


The nerves most frequently affected are CN 3,4,6 and 7and the palsies are usually permanent. 


Palsies in other cranial nerves are usually transient.
