What is the process of converting NH4+ to No3-?

Nitrification

100

Use rate of Instinct NXTGEN?

12-24oz is the normal recommended rate. 12oz with reduced rate nitrogen, 24 with high rate. UP to 48oz with fall manure

100

What is the use rate of N-Serve?

1 Qt, .5qt with sidedress

100

How many EPA approved “nitrogen stabilizers” are there in the market? What are their brand names?

N-Serve, Instinct, Centuro

100

Nitrapyrin improves nitrogen being held in the soil by ___%?

28% greater soil retention. Could you reduce a growers nitrogen rate by 28%?

200

How much nitrogen can you loose through leaching and denitrification?

70% of all loss happens below ground

200

What do we use to clean out instinct in equipment?

Water

200

How long does 1Qt of N-Serve generally last from a fall and spring application?

Fall 90 days, Spring 60 days.  N-Serve breaks down with heat and moisture.

200

How long has both Nitrapyrin and DCD been on the market?

Both were commercialized in 1970's

200

Nitrapyrin will reduce leaching by ____?

Leaching reduction of 16%

300

How far down the soil profile can 1 inch of rain move nitrates down the soil profile?

12 inch's in course textured soils, roughly 6" in clay loams

300

UAN Liquid Fertilizer contains which 3 sources of N?  What is their % and can we stabilize them?

UAN (Urea 50%, Ammonia 25%, Nitrate 25%) All but the nitrate can be stabilized

300

Is N-Serve water soluable?

No, it is solvent based.

300

DCD is what % Nitrogen?

67%

300

Nitrapyrin will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by ___?

51% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions

400

After 3 days of saturated soils, how much nitrogen can you lose to denitrification?

10%, after 5 days it's actually 30% of nitrate nitrogen can be denitrified

400

What is our average yield increase for Instinct Spring applied?

8 bu in the fall, 6 in the spring pre, 5 bu sidedress

400

What is our average N-Serve Yield increase?

7 fall, 8 spring, 4 sidedress

400

Is DCD water soluable?

Yes, it will wash away after the first significant rainfall. ISU data shows that after 3 inches of rain DCD proves 0% nitrogen inhibition.

400

Is Nitrapyrin water soluable?

No, the active ingredient Nitrapyrin is not water soluble.  Instinct is a water soluble formulation, but the active ingredient inside is not.

500

With 70 degree soil temps, how long does it take to convert ammonium to nitrate in the soil?

9 days

500

Urease inhibitors vs Instinct, When should we use one or the other, or both?

Urease inhibitors make sense with urea that lay's on top of the soil for a long period of time. But if it's incorporated with rain or tillage fairly timely, it's a waste of a growers money, even if they are cheaper up front.

500

When N-Serve has crystals around a pump or left in a tote, what are they?

The crystals are the active ingredient.

500

How much DCD is needed to be effective on Nitrosomonas bacteria compared to nitrapyrin?

30x the amount of nitrapyrin is what Ohio State would claim.

500

Does Nitrapyrin kill bacteria?

No, however Nitrapyrin can be a bactericide at high rates. At the rates we commercially use we put the bacteria in statis. We affect the AMO enzyme which they need to function.
