What is reference nonfiction?
Help the reader identify key topics in the book and the order they were presented.
What is Table of Contents?
Help the reader navigate through sections of text.
What are Subtitles?
Helps the reader by signaling the word is important and/or found in the glossary.
What is Bold or Highlighted Words?
Help the reader understand where things are in the world.
What are Maps?
The feeling or impression the author leaves with their writing
What is Mood?
Help the reader gather additional information or help explain something. Usually located in a box off to the side of the text.
What are Sidebars?
Invites readers into the story and Uses vivid details
What is Narrative nonfiction?
Slanted text that helps a reader understand the word is important.
What is Italics?
Repeating the same word or phrase at the beginning of several sentences: “We shall fight them on the beaches. We shall fight them in the skies” (Churchill)

Drawings that help the reader understand exactly what something looks like.
