Help them!
You see a student isolated / alone
Go say hi and check in on them
Students are complaining about a particular teacher
Don't join in. Redirect conversation.
Discuss the idea that we all have to work with people we don't always like - think of strategies with the class.
You hear a student make some racist/sexist etc. jokes
Tell them that's not okay - even if it's a "joke"
Give the student something to do, give positive feedback to those who are following the rules, Keep a sense of humour
If you see a Year 9 out and about around town (out of school time)
You're about to lead a game in front of the class, but are super anxious about it
Take some deep breaths, work with your other leader (team lead). It's okay to make muckups - laugh it off
A student is having a problem with the form class
Talk to them to see if you (as a student) can find out why - let their form teacher know.
A student is always being rude/talking when you are talking to them.
Let them know it's not okay - talk to them at the end (or talk to form teacher about it).
A stiuation begins to look threatening
Introduce another game/activity. Refer to school guidelines. Discuss the situation with the group and get them to share their feelings/thoughts
You are rostered on but can't make it. Who are the 3 people you need to let know?
Other peer support leader, Head of House, Form teacher of class
Class doesn't participate in the game
Ask them what they want to do. Encourage them. Change to another game - e.g. do they need to get outside for a breather?
A student is having problems with friends
Chat to them - think of solutions together. Suggest where they can go for help (e.g. Guidance)
The class always excludes one student
Try some group activities that are mixed up. Think about different activities that can be about inclusion
You forget about peer support!
Apologise and grovel for forgiveness. Put a reminder on your phone.
You see Year 9s vaping
Let the student know that it's against the school rules/law etc.
Let a teacher know (e.g. one nearby if in the toilets)
You're overloaded with school work and responsibilities
Have a talk with your Head of House, other leader - do you need to take a short break? Can you do alternate weeks?
A student is having problems with home
Let the form teacher know (in private) and explain to the student about how to get an appointment at guidance to chat to somebody about it
You have an activity that requires the internet/power - and both are down!
Some students may feel reluctant to share things to the class
Create a culture of inclusivity. Give them the option to pass if they wish.
You encounter a fight
Don't let yourself get hurt, but try to help stop the situation.
Send someone to get a teacher
You have GATEWAY on Tuesday when you're meant to be in formtime
Let your HOH/form teacher know - maybe you will need to swap days?
A student shares something concerning with you
Guidance, Form teacher etc.
You are sick!
Email the form teacher/HOH/other leader so they know
The class don't understand your game/instructions
Try to explain again in a different way - or get your other leader to explain it. Role model it.
