1988 Iran Air Flight 655 Crash
Date: July 3, 1988
Cause: Missile fired by United States Navy
Deaths: 290
The destruction of Iran Air Flight 655 happened during the invasion of Iran by neighboring Iraq. The United States supported Saddam Hussein in his campaign against the Iranians, stationing naval vessels in the Persian Gulf to offer support and protect oil shipping lanes. On July 3, 1988, the USS Vincennes had been exchanging fire with Iranian ships in the gulf when Flight 655 took off from Bandar Abbas International Airport. Confusing the commercial airliner for a military aircraft, the Vincennes fired two missiles at the flight. Everyone on board was killed, and Iranian officials believed the attack to be a purposeful assault on civilians. The incident is still remembered in Iran and is one of the reasons tensions between Iranians and the US government remain so high today.
