What's that Word?
Variable, Variable, Variable
Name that Step
Its all In the Measurements
Converting & Reading
100
The process used to find answers to a question about the world around us.
What is the scientific method?
100
A general term used to represent any part or item in an experiment that CAN CHANGE. (example the amount of water, time, or temperature). In math class and when we do math problems in science this term refers to the letter that represents a physical quantity or unknown value in an equation. (example: t for time or T for temperature)
What is a variable?
100
Often the first step in the scientific method. In this step we gather information about the world around us using our five senses.
What is an observation?
100
Scientists use this system of units to conveniently communicate measurements to one another. This system is based on powers of ten so it makes conversions really easy.
What are SI units or what is metric system?
100
Johnny uses a meter stick to record a distance of 8 cm. The SI base unit is a meter. So he would record his answer as _________ m.
What is 0.08 meters or 0.08m? Recall there are 100 cm in a meter several ways to convert - from the reading packet - method 1 what you have times the multiplying factor 8cm x .01 m = 0.08 m method 2 from the conversion page 11 8cm x 1m/100cm = 0.08 m
200
A question that can be answered by conducting an experiment. Note these can not be answered with a simple yes or no. Nor is it something that is a simple fact found in a textbook.
What is a testable question?
200
The part of the experiment that I the scientist change.
What is the independent or manipulated variable?
200
Once we make an observation and come up with a question we want to test we often do this to see what information already exists. Interestingly enough most school labs skip this step because the teacher has already done it for the students. However, it is essential if you are participating in a science fair!
What is do background research?
200
This is the base unit scientists use when measuring a length.
What is a meter?
200
When 5,000 mg are converted to grams, this is the answer we have.
What is 5 g? this is the same as the conversion we did on pg 11 in the reading #3 applying math - I just changed the unit from meters to grams and the value from 3,000 to 5,000 take a look at the steps from your reading
300
Generally written as IF ... Then.... This is an "educated guess" or a prediction of an experimental results which is based on background knowledge or research.
What is a hypothesis?
300
In this type of experiment only one variable can be changed by the scientist. One or more things may have measurable changes as a result of the change the scientist makes. However, it is important that the scientist only makes 1 purposeful change.
What is a controlled experiment?
300
Before an experiment is conducted this step requires us to predict our outcome.
What is a hypothesis?
300
This doesn't seem like a base unit because it has a metric pre-fix. However, scientists most commonly use this unit when making a measurement of mass.
What is a kilogram?
300
A student decides he is going to see if mass affects the time it takes for an object to hit the ground. Starting from the same height he drops two similar objects (same size and shape) but one is really light and the other is really heavy. He records the time that it takes for an object to hit the ground. Initially he thought that the heavy object would hit the ground first but he found out that they hit the ground at the same time. Ms. Czap asked him to give a hypothesis, identify his independent and dependent variables, list his constants, and indicate whether or not his hypothesis was supported. He responded
Hypothesis: If I drop a heavier mass it will take less time to hit the ground. (because it falls faster) Independent Variable: Mass of the Object dropped Dependent Variable: time it takes to hit the ground Constant: initial height of the objects, size and shape of the object Hypothesis is not supported because they hit the ground at the same time. This seems to indicate that the mass doesn't affect the time it takes an object to fall to the ground.

In an experiment this is something that does not change, it is purposefully kept the same. Often times it is a little confusing because tests will use two different words for this same thing.
What is a control? or What is a constant?
400
Numerical results that are gathered from an experiment are called _____________ data.
What is quantitative?
400
After we have designed an experiment this is the next step. (careful this one is really obvious)
What is conduct the experiment?
400
In Elementary and Middle school we talk about temperature in Fahrenheit and Celsius. However, this base unit is used by scientists to record temperatures.
What is Kelvin?
400
Our class conducted a candy lab to see if eating a mint while you studied and took a test increased test scores. The independent variable was _________ The dependent variable was ________. The control group was _________
Independent variable: The type of candy eaten while studying and taking the test dependent variable: the test score Control group: the students who did not eat candy while studying or taking the test
500
A group which is used as a comparison or standard. (often represents the "normal condition" in a biological or chemical experiment)
What is a control group?
500
Experimental observations that are gathered by our senses during an experiment are called _______________ data.
What is qualitative data?
500
After we have analyzed our data we need to do this and consider whether or not we are ready to publish our results or if we need to do more experimenting.
What is make a conclusion? You may have also said check to see if the hypothesis is supported or not supported, if supported publish results - if not supported retest.
500
In the metric system we can use a prefix to represent each of the following multiplying factors: 1,000 0.01 and 0.001.
What is kilo, centi, milli?
500
A student wants to test the claim that a fertilizer makes. The company claims that the addition of fertilizer to plant soil will speed up the growth of the plant. After doing some research the student thinks this is a reasonable claim but would like to do a controlled experiment to test it. The student's hypothesis is
If fertilizer is added to the soil of a growing plant the plant will grow more quickly. Or If fertilizer is added to the soil of a growing plant the height of the plant will increase more quickly than if no fertilizer is added. ...
