An example of a nonverbal communication would be
  • Facial expression – Often the facial expressions of the speaker communicate conflicting messages from their spoken words.  It is important to be aware of what information is communicated with facial expressions and make an effort to manage your expression, so it supports the intention of the message.
  • Proxemics – This is the space around the speaker and/or listener.  A person’s interpretation of what is a safe personal space can impact what is communicated in conversations.  For example, invading another’s personal space is often interpreted as intimidating.
  • Kinesics – This is the motion and posture of the body that occurs when one is communicating.  For example, if the speaker is leaning towards the audience, this communicates a very different message than if the speaker is cowering away from the audience.
