The standard translation for “Allahu Akbar” is, “Allah is the Greatest.” The word “akbar,” however is a comparative - so it means “greater than,” not “greatest.”
This sounds like an incomplete thought: “Allah is greater than...” Allah is greater than what?
This statement has been left open-ended on purpose. We see this very often in the Arabic language. Sometimes statements are left open-ended so that the reader or listener can customize the message to him/herself.
“Allahu Akbar” means .. “Allah is greater than ___,” we can fill in that blank for ourselves. Allah (SWT) is greater than whatever is distracting me from my prayer at that very moment. If my phone is ringing, Allah (SWT) is greater than that phone call. If the game is on, Allah (SWT) is bigger than that game. If someone is waiting for me, Allah (SWT) is more important than that person.
