Salinity is a measure of _____
dissolved salts
rhythmic disturbances that carry energy
organisms that make their own food
waves
producers
organisms that get food by eating producers or consumers
organisms that break down dead organisms
consumers
decomposers
Which position[s] of the moon would cause lower high tides and higher low tides? Why?
A because the sun, moon and earth are not aligned
Which position[s] of the moon would cause higher high tides and lower low tides? Why?
B, C because the sun, moon, and earth are aligned
Many animals use ____ to form bones or shells
calcium
the rise and fall of sea level
measure of the amount of salts dissolved in the ocean
tide
salinity
currents in deep water that form when dense seawater sinks
currents caused by wind
density current
surface current
Aurther C. said it is inappropriate to call our planet earth, when clearly it is ocean. why would he say that?
He said that because three-fourths of earth is water.
you visited the seashore one summer and there was a wide beach. You visited the same beach the following year and the sand was gone, only rocks remained. Why?
A longshore current runs parallel to the shore taking the sand and leaving the rocks.
A zone in the ocean were temperatures change rapidly is the _____
thermocline
tiny marine producers
organisms that swim freely
plankton
nekton
current that brings to the surface cold, deep seawater
ocean layer that experiences rapid temperature change with increases depth
upwelling
thermocline
how did the steep cliffs along the coast of England form?
waves can erode many meters of land in a single season. They were away rock at the base of rocky shorelines, then overhanging rocks fall into the water, leaving a steep cliff.
explain upwelling and tell why fishers look forward to it.
an upwelling is a current in the ocean that brings deep, cold water to the ocean surface. Concentration of nutrients causes tiny marine organisms to flourish and fish to be attracted to areas of upwelling.
the tidal range is affected by _____
producers containing chlorophyll _____
position of the moon
perform photosynthesis
community of organisms and the nonliving factors that affect them
systems in which energy is transferred from producer, consumer, decomposer
ecosystem
food chain
volcanoes erupted, releasing lava, ash, gases, and water vapor
water accumulated in the lowest parts of earth's surface

would you expect water off the beaches of southern California to be warmer or cooler than water off the beaches of Florida. Why?
California would be cooler because the California current is cold because it flows from north to south and in Florida the gulf stream is warmer because it flows from south to north.
Compare and contrast the roles of producers and consumers in the ocean?
They are both organisms. Producers are organisms that can make their own food, but consumers are organisms that eat or consume producers or other consumers.
most of earths rain and snow comes from ____
An ocean current only a few hundred meters deep and powered by the wind is a _____
the oceans
surface current
process for making food that does not require chlorophyll
process for making food and oxygen using chlorophyll, sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water
chemosynthesis
photosynthesis
torrential rains began to fall from the clouds
water vapor condensed to form clouds

How do breakers form?
As the bottom of the wave slows, the crest and trough come closer together and the wave height increases. The bottom of the wave moves faster so eventually the wave collapse and that is called a breaker.
Follow one molecule of nitrogen from the atmosphere through a nitrogen cycle that ends up back in the atmosphere.
Lighting changes nitrogen in the atmosphere to nitrates then bacteria changes nitrogen gas into nitrates then algae and plants use nitrates for growth then bacteria decomposes dead organisms to produce nitrates and nitrogen gas then animals get nitrogen by eating other organisms and then it repeats it self.
