Which layer of earth plays a HUGE role in the Carbon Cycle?

Mantle

100

How many rocks are in the rock cycle?

3

100

Is an Opal an internal or external process? Why?

Internal because they are formed inside of the earth.

100

Where can a Pumice rock be found. Be specific.

Ocean surface...just floating

100

Diamonds are formed deep deep deep in the mantle. Near the bottom. It is tooo hot to dig here. How are diamonds able to be found/mined if they are too far in the mantle to get?

Diamond mines dig down into the kimberlite to find diamonds. Kimberlites are a type of igneous rock. Kimberlites are one of the only types of intrusions to bring diamonds up from the mantle with them because of how deep in the mantle the originate. Without kimberlites, diamonds would stay in the mantle.

200

Describes how heat moves through the mantle due to uneven heating from Earth’s core; hot magma rises, cool magma sinks

Convection Currents

200

Which rock is made from extreme heat and pressure.

Metamorphic Rock

200

What kind of rock would an opal be considered?

Sedimentary Rock

200

name one way the pumice rock is used

shading of dead skin

200

how is a diamond formed

a diamond is formed when carbonated rocks are put under intense heat and pressure deep under the crust

300

Which Plate Tectonic plays a role in the Carbon Cycle?

Subduction

300

Which rock can be found around volcanoes?

Igneous Rock

300

the process of rocks breaking up into smaller pieces is called?

weathering

300

what type of rock is the pumice rock?

igneous rock

300

what kind of rock is a diamond

metamorphic

400

What is subduction?

Subduction is when the ocean crust is submerged under the continental crust because the oceanic crust is less densed than the continental crust.

400

Which kind of rock can most likely found is New Orleans? Why?

Sedimentary Rock because New Orleans is surrounded by a lot of water and Sedimentary Rocks need water to help it form.

400

The process by which soil and rock are moved from one place to another is called

erosion

400

Is the pumice rock More dense or Less dense than the water? What is a clear indication of that?

Less dense because it floates.

400

a 3-dimensional pattern of bonded atoms/molecules when they create a solid that is based on a repeating subunit

Crystalline Structure-

500

Clearly state the steps to the Carbon Cycle.

CO2 is in the atmosphere/clouds

CO2 falls to the ocean with rain.

CO2 falls to the ocean floor and attaches to the rocks on the ocean floor. These rocks turns into  Carbonated Rocks.

CO2 the rocks get Subducted into the mantle and is melted but not the CO2 because it cant be destroyed.

CO2 gets recycled around in the mantle through convection currents and some of the CO2 seeks back out through volcano eruptions and the CO2 goes right back into the atmosphere/clouds.

500

A rock is pushed deep underground in an area where mountain-building is occurring and undergoes the following processes:

  • First, the rock experiences high heat pressure that causes its minerals to align themselves in bands.
  • Second, the rock is pushed further underground and completely melts, then erupts from a volcano and hardens.
  • Third, the rock is broken down by wind and water into smaller particles, which flow into a river and get compressed into rock.

Which order correctly shows the progression of rock types as described above?

Metamorphic to Igneous to Sedimentary

500

what are the ingredients for an opal to form?

hint: there's 6 of them.
