Serfs could not leave the land, choose their jobs, or improve their social status. Their hard work supported the entire system, yet they received only basic protection and survival in return. Peasants worked insanely hard for their crops which got taken away by taxes, leaving them with barely enough food to survive.

Social structure- in US, people can move between social classes through education, careers, or entrepreneurship, celebrities (though barriers still exist). Ancient is more rigid.
