SMART guess. To have all of that happen to one person during one day could certainly cause it to be the worst day ever.

UNEXPECTED behavior. One message is enough to let your friend know you called. If there is something extremely important that you need to share, you can tell the person taking the message (or say in the message you leave on voicemail) that it is important for your friend to call you back.

EXPECTED behavior. By asking what kind of dog he got, you are showing that you are listening with both your brain and heart. You are not only thinking but also caring about what he is saying by asking a question that shows you were listening. Your friend will be really happy to answer the question.
