In what year did Microsoft first introduce a chatbot in their products?

2014.

Microsoft's first significant foray into chatbots came with **Cortana**, a virtual assistant integrated into Windows Phone 8.1, released in **2014**. Cortana was Microsoft's answer to Apple's Siri and Google Now, allowing users to interact with their devices using natural language for tasks like setting reminders, searching the web, and managing their calendar.

However, Microsoft made a larger leap into chatbot development with **Tay**, an AI-powered chatbot launched in **March 2016**. Tay was designed to engage with users on platforms like Twitter by mimicking the conversational patterns of a teenage girl. Unfortunately, Tay was quickly taken down after it began generating inappropriate and offensive responses, due to learning from online interactions in less than 24 hours.

Following Tay, Microsoft introduced the **Azure Bot Service** in **2017** as part of its suite of cloud services, allowing developers to build, test, and deploy chatbots. Microsoft has since embedded chatbot functionality across its ecosystem, including in **Microsoft Teams**, **Power Virtual Agents**, and the broader **Microsoft 365** suite.

We don't recommend. We don't want other teams to build another Skylight on top of our solutions.

What is RAVE?

RAVE chat is an internal Microsoft tool used primarily for customer support. It's part of their Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, allowing support agents to communicate with users through a chat interface. Microsoft typically uses RAVE chat to provide real-time support for troubleshooting and assisting customers with various issues related to their products, such as Office 365, Windows, or Surface devices.

If you encounter "widget.rave.office.net" during a support session with Microsoft, it is a legitimate subdomain used by Microsoft for these customer interactions. Some users have been concerned about the legitimacy of this tool, but it has been confirmed as part of Microsoft's official support structure

What is the difference between a chat session and a chat conversation?

Conversations may span multiple sessions or agents, depending on if and when the chat is escalated or transferred, but it's focused on the content of the communication. (aka, one conversation can have multiple sessions)
