Before having special education services, the student must go through a few processes: an unstructured diagnostic play session, evaluation, speech assessment, parent interview, current behavior, and an evaluation on life skills. Some accommodations that the student will receive are a quiet testing place, ways to identify their problem and how to keep calm, give extremely clear directions, and another accommodation is to break assignments into small sections instead of an overall big lesson.

Visual impairment and blindness is the type of disability that causes low vision or complete blindness. It can be caused from several different categories. The student may not be able to see, or they have very low vision/sight. The student may not have the ability to fix their problem, such as wearing glasses, contacts, or taking medicine. In this case, they most likely qualify for special education services.

Emotional disturbance falls under IDEA and states that all students who have trouble maintaining relationships, feelings of disturbances, mood changes, etc. Most accommodations that are needed for these students consist of setting goals for the students to reach, setting clear rules and sticking to them, and the students also benefit from having cue words to say when they are having bad behavior. This allows them to realize their behavior and not embarrass them in front of their peers.

Like all other disabilities, this too falls under IDEA. IDEA makes the student eligible for the special education services. The student has to be tested and evaluated before they are put into the program. Accommodations made for specific learning disability can differ, but most of the time they relate to giving the student a little more time. You may have to read slower, provide them with materials to be help the student see larger text or bigger utensils, and maybe even have a student take notes for the student having trouble.

IDEA says that a student who is visually impaired, even with correction, adversely affects the child’s educational performance. It says both blind and partial sight. Therefore, if the child cannot see or nearly cannot see, then the district, under IDEA, is required to provide the services. The accommodations provided for these students are much like the deaf-blind disability. They must provide braille, give the student oral assignments, technology must read aloud or have optional work, textbooks in audio format, and overall more time for assignments.

The students are entitled to have specialized education under IDEA as well. Accommodations that are involved with this disability is to have a quiet work place. Some other things that help the student is to have a hands on learning project(s). Having a schedule to stick with daily helps the student know what they should be doing, and it helps them grasp the concepts of the daily schedule. Another accommodation that helps intellectual disabled children could be to take safety measures all over the classroom; do not have sharp edges or objects out.

Speech language impairment is a communication disorder; this can be stuttering, voice impairment, and/or impaired articulation, that affects the student’s speech.

IDEA in 2004 stated that speech language impairment is a communication disorder. Because of this, the student is allowed to have the education services. Accommodations that this student is granted are: substitute oral assignments with written ones, send them to a speech class, and don’t interrupt the student (allow them to finish what they are saying), and understand that they may not be able to do as much as other students.
