Describe the difference between mechanical and chemical digestion, and provide an example of where each occurs in the mouth.

  • Mechanical digestion is the physical breakdown of food into smaller pieces, such as through chewing (mastication) by the teeth.
  • Chemical digestion is the breakdown of food molecules into simpler forms using enzymes or acids. In the mouth, an enzyme called salivary amylase in saliva begins the chemical digestion of carbohydrates.
400

Name the pathway that food takes from beginning to end.

Mouth, Esophagus, Stomach, Small Intestine, Large Intestine

500
This organ is a muscular tube that uses wave-like contractions (peristalsis) to push food down into the stomach
The Esophagus
500

What is Lysozyme?

An enzyme that destroys bacteria in the mouth.

500

Part of the intestine protrudes through a weak point or tear in the abdominal wall. This protrusion creates a bulge which can be painful.

500

The lining of the small intestine is covered in millions of microscopic, finger-like projections. What are these structures called, and what is their function?

They are called villi (and microvilli). Their function is to significantly increase the surface area of the small intestine, which maximizes the absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream.
