Usually occurs within 24 to 72 hours following fracture. Large areas of lung involvement produce severe pain, dyspnea, cyanosis, restlessness, and shock. Petechiae may appear over neck, upper arms, chest or abdomen. Treatment is bed rest, oxygen, IV fluids and respiratory support.
What is fat embolism syndrome.

If not treated, in 4-6 hours irreversible damage can occur to nerves and muscles and within 24 hours to 48 hours permanent loss of normal limb function can occur. Treatment includes relieving pressure and fasciotomy.
