Marbury v. Madison
Marbury was chosen by Adams to become a justice of the peace. Madison refused to give him his official commission papers. Marbury asked the Supreme Court to force Madison to give him his papers. Marshall ruled that the court did not have the power to force Madison to give Marbury his commission. This ruling gave the Supreme Court the power of judicial review.
