Catholic leaders met to discuss how to deal with the Reformation. They decided that faith and works are needed for salvation. They also stopped corrupt practices of the Catholic Church.

Henry VIII wanted to divorce his wife (the first Catherine) cause she didn't have any boys. The Catholic Church wouldn't let him divorce her, so he decided to start his own church. His son Edward VI and daughter Elizabeth I strengthened the church.
If you payed the Catholic Church money, then loved ones that were stuck in purgatory (paying for their sins) could go to heaven. The Bible says that Jesus payed for all of our sins, we don't need to give money to anyone to "buy" our salvation.

Recanting is taking back what you said. Luther said he would only recant if he was shown by Scripture that he was wrong.
