The most important or central thought of a paragraph or larger section of text, which tells the reader what the text is about
Central Idea
Involves the way characters are portrayed to the reader. A successful author will use dialogue and incidents to help portray characters that are believable and life-like.
Character Development
Descriptions that appeal to the senses of sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch
Imagery
The point of greatest tension in the story, in which the conflict begins to be resolved
Climax
To come to a reasonable conclusion based on information in the text.
Inference
How the main idea progresses through a text. Can be shown through character development, conflict, and setting
Theme Development
Straightforward statements about the characters
Direct Characterization
These help determine the meaning of words as used in a particular line of text.
Context Clues
a form of a verb used as either an adjective or a part of certain tenses (ex. “we are hiding the treasure”).
Participle
A form of writing when the author is telling a story
Narrative
Literary device characterized by a struggle between two opposing forces. It provides crucial tension in any story and is used to drive the narrative forward.
Conflict
Something that occurs in a story
