The trail is a history book that has come to life. One spot on the trail is the Fowey Rocks Lighthouse. People began building the lighthouse in 1875. It was built to warn sailors about the reef that stuck out five miles from the shore. Before this lighthouse was built, the only warning light came from the Cape Florida. This was a lighthouse on the tip of Key Biscayne. This warned sailors about the island, but it did not mark the nearby reef and rocks. Many ships were still in danger.
