During John Adam's presidency, congress passed a law that made it illegal to print or say bad things about the government. It goes against the First Amendment rights - freedom of speech, freedom of the press.

The colonies existed to make money for England. The colonists could buy good from England.

What was the 3/5 compromise?
A constitutional agreement between Northern and Southern states about how to count the slave population when determining the number of representatives for a state. 10 slaves were counted as 6 people. It did NOT give the slaves any rights or voting power.

Washington encouraged America to stay neutral and not get involved in the problems of other countries.

What was the XYZ affair?
During Adam's presidency, three French diplomats asked for a bribe, a loan for France and an apology from the president. Adam's published the demands. This increased the tensions between France and America, and almost led to war.

A law passed by congress during Jackson's presidency that moved Native Americans living east of the Mississippi river to the land west of the Mississippi River.

What was Worcester v Georgia and why was it important?
The Cherokee nation challenged the Indian Removal Act in court. The cast went to the Supreme Court, which sided with the Native Americans. Jackson ignored the Supreme Court ruling and had the Native Americans moved anyway. Jackson took on more power for the presidency by ignoring the Supreme Court ruling.

In Colonial New England, the church and the government were one. Church laws were the laws of the state. You could go to jail for not going to church.

The Supreme Court checks a law to see if it fits with the constitution. A law must be challenged in a lower court and appealed to the Supreme Court for review.
