What is the smallest element on the periodic table?
Hydrogen
How do you know whether a chemical is an acid or base by looking at the chemical formula?
Acid: H in front (bonded to a nonmetal)
Base: OH in the back (bonded to a metal)
Where can you find no-name assignments?
In the gray bin on the desk by the door.
What is Ms. Leonard's first name?
Sydney
Where can you look to find how many grams you need if you want 1 mole of a chemical?
Periodic table
How do you calculate molar mass?
On my daily agenda slides, where can you find the ignite? (Where on the slide?)
The left side.
Multilingual Physics
Why is it colder in the basement (or lowest floor of a building)?
Cold air is more dense. Hot air is less dense. Heat rises.
Why does a stiff balloon pop on a warm day?
Increase temperature --> increase pressure in the balloon --> balloon pops
Where are the small whiteboard erasers kept?
In the drawer under the TV up front.
What extracurricular activity is Ms. Leonard involved with at MCHS?
Musical Dance Choreography
What is the purpose of a stoichiometry problem?
Stoichiometry calculations help us figure out how much of a chemical we either need or can make in a chemical reaction.
You need to make sure the top (mass) numbers and the bottom (proton) numbers are the same on both sides of the arrow due to the law of conservation of matter.
i.e. you cannot start with more/less than you end with.
QUICK! What pet pictures are up around the room? (What are they/how many?)
2 dogs
How many years has Ms. Leonard been at McHenry?
3 years
Describe how to titrate an acid with a base and what the purpose is.
You add a certain volume of base (of known concentration) to a certain volume of acid that has pH indicator in it. Once the indicator turns a very light pink, you have added enough to get just passed the neutral point. You can then use MaVa=MbVb to determine the molarity (strength) of the acid. You can then use this to determine the exact pH of the acidic solution.
Describe how to perform a dilution and what the purpose is.
A dilution's purpose is to create a dilute/less concentrated/less strong solution from a concentrated/strong solution. You use M1V1=M2V2 to determine how much of the stock solution of known concentration you need to make a dilute solution of known volume and concentration.
You measure out the volume of the stock with a graduated cylinder, add the liquid to a beaker, and then add in water that gets you to the final desired volume.
On my daily agenda slides, where can you find the essential question? (Where on the slide?)
The top.
A. Where did Ms. Leonard go to college?
B. What extracurricular activity did she participate in?
A. ISU
B. Circus
