While other teenagers flipped burgers and stocked groceries, this 14-year-old was riding her bicycle to her first marketing job. Calling prospective customers from her neighbor’s garage in small-town Illinois, she convinced them to set up appointments to have their carpets cleaned. And since shyness has never been a problem for this former live theater performer and one-time stand-up comedian, she made the sales and earned her money. A few years later, she studied art and psychology in college, which led her again to marketing and advertising. She built a career out of it at Walgreens, working her way up to become the company’s first female creative director.
